  • 5'2" X 3'11" Rare Dokhtar-e-Ghazi Afghanistan Rug [SH-377]

Rare Dokhtar-e-Ghazi meditation (Window Portal?) rug. The rectangular central panel is filled with saturated diamonds in diagonal rows from left/right. The field shows abrashed sections, as it took a long time to weave. The abrash represents many seasons. Sheep/goat/wool hair plants. Side to side, the diagonal field motifs start/end out from an electric blue running dog/latch hook inner border.

The light pumpkin, rose madder, and purple diamond rows contain a cruciform center. A fine lattice frames them in blue. Serpentine/ S-shape motif creates a ribbon guard border. A diamond-fitted main border replaces the usual tile pattern; no comparables know. Do the diagonal diamond rows flow under the four outer borders, resting on a greenish ground?

Multi-striped kilim ends. In original condition. Goat hair side selvedges. Museum-quality hand-washed. Second half of the 19th century. Northwestern Afghanistan.
