Collector's Notes
Antique Caucasian rug. This is a rare and highly collectible antique Karagashli Kuba rug woven in the mid to late 19th century. It is finely woven with a supple handle featuring beautifully saturated natural colors. This piece features an interlocking bird latch hook border enclosing a glowing blue field with curvilinear and square pointed leaves in striking scarlet-red etched in ivory outlining.
The field design draws from the classic Kuba 'Afshan' split-leaf and flower design. Blue abstract lily leaves lay against the scarlet-red foliage amongst the floating drawing of birds and two tribal animals rest upon the second row of bird pairings. Two columns of ivory, red, and blue stars dance along the left and right axis of this dazzling blue background. One of the oldest and finest known examples of the genre. A true collector's piece. Gorgeous wall art.
