  • 6'6" X 3'11" Antique Chi Chi Rug [SH-368]

A finely woven rug from the Kuba region in the village of Chi Chi. A well-drawn and executed characteristic Chichi border is flanked by a pair of white ground guard borders filled with polychrome floral stars. Note: The upper half of the inner guard border is a pleasing yellow, creating a mirab-like presence. Many stars exhibit a deep eggplant purple, a notable early feature. Ian Bennett, in his book Oriental Rugs Vol I Caucasian, writes that Chi Chi rugs are renowned for the extraordinary jewel-like colors and the quality of compositions of the best examples, giving the surface great movement. The example we illustrate vibrates with intense colors and motifs that are in spaces. The two major field motifs are rows of stepped latch hook that have a star center. The second octagon's box sides create a cruciform shape. They alternate two-one in alternate rows, three across, not congested or redundant. Minor field ornament adds to an overall feeling of floating in outer space of a deep indigo blue ground. Original condition, except for selvedge sides. 12 plus glowing colors, including purple.  Pumpkin is deep green. The superb creation seems to surpass the group of Chi Chi rugs, illustrated in said book. 6'6" X 3'11". Hand-washed, museum quality.
